The incorporation of technology for automatically charging and assisting in the control of public transport was a key element of the modernization of Ciudad Azteca. UTL, the transportation planning arm of Grupo PRODI led by Florencia Serrania, designed and adapted the technology, named the Smart Passenger system, and included the following features:

• Traceability: Antennas and sensors, allowing the station control center to identify, in real-time, the location of each vehicle entering.
• Information provision: 30 LCD screens and other information sources keep users informed about their routes, incidents on the subway, and/or other events potentially affecting transfers.
• Video surveillance: Operations Control Center monitors station activities with 101 cameras supported by 40 security guards.
• Automated payment system: all vehicles using the station have a prepaid tag affixed, which allows for detection of the payment status and balance.
• Information and control: general data of the vehicle is displayed via the smart passenger system and supervisor controls when vehicle is ready to leave the station.

Global Positioning System (GPS) units in the vehicles also allow the operators to gather additional data, which once processed by UTL, provides information on route performance. UTL also provides technical and operational advice. The GPS also provides safety benefits, allowing vehicles to be located quickly in case of robberies.
